Papers concerning the establishment and construction of the University of Virginia, 1817-1826.

The collection consists of photostats of letters from Thomas Jefferson to James Dinsmore, Matthew Brown, Thomas Cooper, James Oldham and John H. Cocke concerning the hire of John M. Perry for wooden work, brickwork for Central college, work on the Rotunda, progress of the University, and a recommendation for William Coffee as sculptor. Miscellaneous pieces include photostats of Jefferson's notes on expenses, ca. 1818-1819, an indenture 1823, in Jefferson's hand concerning the Literary Fund, a plan for a botanical garden by Correa de Serra, and 2 pages of notes on the the proposed selection of Lexington, Va., as the site of the University of Virginia, with annotations in Jefferson's hand.
